Graptopetalum macdougallii quick care tips

Watering

Graptopetalum macdougallii is a drought-tolerant succulent variety, so watering around once per week in the peak growing season is advised. Ensure the soil dries between waterings following the 3 Ds: drench, drain and dry. It is also advised to completely stop watering when conditions are frosty, keeping the plant dry for several months at a time over winter.

Feeding

Graptopetalum macdougallii likes to be fed to bring out its best forms and colours. We recommend feeding with a liquid seaweed feed every 2 weeks in the main growing season from April to September. A feed we recommend is the one from our friends at LittleGreenSeaweed.

Ideal soil

Graptopetalum macdougallii needs free draining soil to thrive. We recommend a mixture of 1/3 John Innes no.2, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 coconut coir. The soil mix we offer here is similar in composition to this.

Graptopetalum macdougallii

This delightful rare species native to the Oaxaca region in Mexico, grows into a tight mound of starshaped rosettes.

If enough space is allowed, this stunning succulent can spread over a metre, producing the most amazing display. It has a very similar growth pattern to Echeveria prolifica in the way it produces an abundance of many offsets on axillary runners. Graptopetalum macdougallii produces beautiful bright pink/red star shaped flowers during mid spring which really contrast against its pale lime coloured leaves. It can grow in part shade to full sun and as the light levels intensify, the older leaves turn a pale pink in colour. It’s low growing habit makes it the ideal succulent for a bowl planter for an outside garden table.
