In-Depth: Aloe polyphylla Care Guide

The Aloe polyphylla, commonly called the Spiral Aloe, is a favourite among succulent enthusiasts due to its striking growth pattern and hardiness. This unique succulent can withstand temperatures well below freezing, making it an excellent choice for outdoor gardens year-round in the UK.

Facts about the plant

Native to the Maluti mountains of Lesotho, the Aloe polyphylla thrives in mineral-rich soils and snowy winters, and it is also the national plant of Lesotho. Unlike many succulents, the Spiral Aloe is quite thirsty and hungry, requiring more frequent watering and feeding during its growing season. It needs plenty of air around its roots, but overwatering can lead to rot, so good drainage is crucial.

Soil Mix

To support healthy growth, we recommend a soil mix of 55% multipurpose compost, 25% perlite, and 20% pumice stones. As the Aloe grows, its lower leaves will naturally dry out and die back, promoting new root growth. These leaves can be removed carefully by hand.

Placement

When planting, it’s best to place the Aloe on a raised mound or at an angle to encourage water to drain away from the crown. The Aloe polyphylla is incredibly resilient, able to thrive in full sun and temperatures as low as -15°C (in mature plants).

Quick Care Tips

  • Plant at an angle to allow excess water to run off from the crown.
  • Hardy to -15°C, making it a perfect outdoor succulent for UK gardens.
  • Thrives in full sun with a well-draining soil mix.
  • Water and feed generously during the growing season.
  • Ideal soil mix: 55% compost, 25% perlite, and 20% pumice stones.
