Fenestraria aurantiaca quick care tips

Watering

Fenestraria aurantiaca is a drought-tolerant succulent variety, so watering around once per week in the peak growing season is advised. Ensure the soil dries between waterings following the 3 Ds: drench, drain and dry. It is also advised to completely stop watering when conditions are frosty, keeping the plant dry for several months at a time over winter.

Feeding

Fenestraria aurantiaca likes to be fed to bring out its best forms and colours. We recommend feeding with a liquid seaweed feed every 2 weeks in the main growing season from April to September.

Ideal soil

Fenestraria aurantiaca needs free draining soil to thrive. We recommend a mixture of 1/3 John Innes no.2, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 coconut coir. The soil mix we offer here is similar in composition to this.

Fenestraria aurantiaca

These fascinating plants are native to South African and Namibia, there commonly known as baby toes or window plants due to their appearance. They grow in sandy soils almost completely hidden from praying animals, only the very tips where the windows are situated are on show, these specially designed windows allow light to pass through allowing the plant to photosynthesize. Fenestraria aurantiaca have adapted to grow in low rainfall area’s during the Summer months and then spring into life when the rains come in Autumn, they also produce a bright yellow flower during this period.
