Aloe perfoliata quick care tips

Watering

Aloe perfoliata is a drought-tolerant succulent variety, so watering around once per week in the peak growing season is advised. Ensure the soil dries between waterings following the 3 Ds: drench, drain and dry. It is also advised to completely stop watering when conditions are frosty, keeping the plant dry for several months at a time over winter.

Feeding

Aloe perfoliata likes to be fed to bring out its best forms and colours. We recommend feeding with a liquid seaweed feed every 2 weeks in the main growing season from April to September.

Ideal soil

Aloe perfoliata needs free draining soil to thrive. We recommend a mixture of 1/3 John Innes no.2, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 coconut coir. The soil mix we offer here is similar in composition to this.

Aloe perfoliata

Aloe perfoliata, also known as the short-leaved Aloe, is a species from South Africa (Cape).

This Aloe species features short green leaves that point upwards as it grows. Aloe perfoliata has green leaves that can turn blue and even pink under high light levels. It is a taller growing Aloe with sharp teeth on each leaf. It is known to cause severe discomfort if consumed, keep away from pets. It blooms in Autumn with small tubular-shaped red flowers.

A perfect house plant for your indoor windowsill. Would also look great in a rockery.

  • Choose a pot with a drainage hole if you can’t limit the watering (outdoors). A pot with no drainage hole can be used as long as you water moderately. A pot with a hole tends to be more forgiving. Also, as it is slightly breathable, a terracotta pot is usually preferred over a plastic pot, but the succulents dont seem to mind too much.
