A cracking, almost stemless succulent, believed to be a naturalised garden hybrid of Aeonium cuneatum x Aeonium barbatum. It's a fantastic plant for exposed sunny locations (stone wall) and clumps forming hundreds of similar-sized rosettes. We have grown this hybrid for well over 15 years and have yet to see it in flower. A fantastic feature plant.

Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' is delivered bare-root and needs time to settle into its new pot. Unpack it carefully, remove the packaging and check the leaves, stems and roots have arrived in good health.

Plant Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' in the free-draining compost recommended in this guide, spreading the roots into a natural position rather than forcing them in. Set the rosettes level with or just above the surface so no leaf bases sit buried in damp compost. Hold the plant at the correct depth while you fill around the roots, then tap the pot lightly on the bench a few times to settle the mixture. Do not firm it down hard by hand.

Wait five to seven days before watering. This lets any small root injuries from lifting and transport dry, reducing the risk of rot. After that, water lightly while the roots establish, then move to the normal 3 D's routine once the plant is firmly rooted and growing.

Keep Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' in a bright, sheltered spot while it establishes. Shade it from strong midday sun for the first week, then introduce it gradually to its recommended light. A little softness or the loss of a few older leaves is normal while new roots form.

Watering

Water Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' thoroughly, moistening the whole root area and letting all excess drain away freely. Wait until the compost has dried before watering again. Follow our 3 D's method: drench, drain and dry.

Like all Aeoniums, Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' does its main growing in spring and autumn, slowing right down through the coldest UK winter weather and pausing in high summer heat. This is when it takes up the most water, so check the compost regularly through the growing season and water by how dry it feels rather than to a fixed timetable.

Because the rosettes sit low, near the compost surface, take care not to leave water pooling in their centres. Keep Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' much drier during hot summer weather, when it turns semi-dormant, and through cold winter spells. Always water in the morning so the foliage and surface can dry before temperatures fall.

Light and position

Provide Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' with Full Sun - 5+ Hours of Sun. Suitable positions can include Balcony, Patio, Conservatory, and Rockery. Good, even light keeps the rosettes flat, tight and richly coloured, and encourages the plant to spread into a dense low mat rather than reaching upwards.

In poor light the rosettes loosen, pale and lift on stretched stalks, spoiling the ground-hugging habit. Rotate pot-grown plants regularly so the whole clump develops evenly.

Introduce Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' to stronger sunshine gradually after winter, delivery or a period under cover, and give temporary shade during fierce heatwaves if the leaves begin to mark.

Compost and drainage

Plant Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' in a free-draining mixture of roughly 60% multi-purpose compost and 40% horticultural grit or perlite, our recommended blend for Aeoniums. Always choose a pot with unrestricted drainage holes.

Because it spreads sideways rather than upwards, Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' suits a broad, shallow pan that lets the low rosettes and offsets fill out. Avoid a deep, oversized container, where surplus compost stays wet long after the roots have finished drinking.

Terracotta works well, as its porous walls help the compost dry evenly. A generous top-dressing of horticultural grit keeps the low rosettes and their lower leaves off damp compost and greatly reduces the risk of rot.

Feeding

Fresh compost should feed Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' for roughly three to six months. After that, apply a balanced liquid feed at half the recommended strength every two weeks, but only while the plant is in active growth through its spring and autumn growing season.

Feed when the compost is already moist, ideally just after watering, so the nutrients spread around the roots without scorching them.

Stop feeding through high-summer dormancy and prolonged cold weather. Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' cannot use the nutrients while growth has paused, and soft, forced growth is far more vulnerable to rot and frost.

Winter care

The recorded minimum temperature for Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' is -2°C. Being frost-tender, it must be moved into a bright, airy and protected position before conditions fall below this level. A greenhouse, conservatory or bright, cool room suits it well; unlike a Sempervivum it is not hardy and will not survive a hard frost.

Keep the compost much drier through winter, watering only around every six weeks on average, as cold, wet roots and rosettes sitting near the surface are especially prone to rot. Do not stand the plant over a radiator, where dry heat and weak light produce distorted growth.

Use good horticultural fleece for extra protection during short cold snaps, and allow air to move around the low clump whenever conditions permit.

Summer care

In prolonged hot, dry weather Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' enters its natural summer semi-dormancy. The rosettes tighten and curl inwards, growth stalls and some lower leaves shrivel and drop. This is the plant conserving moisture, not a sign of ill health.

Move it out of fierce afternoon sun if the leaves scorch. Reduce watering sharply while the rosettes stay closed and stop feeding altogether. A half-strength liquid seaweed feed misted over the foliage in the cool of early morning, every couple of weeks, acts as a tonic that helps Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' cope with heat stress without wetting the roots.

As cooler autumn weather returns and the rosettes begin to open and flatten again, gradually resume normal watering. Check the compost first, as a low, dormant clump can hold moisture around its roots for some time.

Repotting

Repot Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' in spring or early autumn once the roots fill the pan or the spreading rosettes reach the rim. Use fresh, free-draining compost and choose a broad, shallow, stable pot only moderately larger than the root system.

Keep the base of every rosette level with or just above the compost so damp material cannot collect between the lower leaves. Long, trailing low stems can be laid against the surface, where they often root and thicken the clump.

Support the rosettes from beneath and never pull the plant up by its leaves. Let any damaged roots or stems dry before watering.

Common problems

Loose, stretched rosettes lifting on pale stalks mean Aeonium 'Rock Hopper' needs more light. Move it gradually somewhere brighter and turn the pot regularly to keep the clump even and low.

Soft stems, blackened tissue or sudden collapse point to excess moisture, especially in cold weather, in summer dormancy, or where water has settled in a low rosette. Remove affected growth and let the healthy tissue and compost dry before watering again.

Older lower leaves drying and dropping is normal as the clump matures and spreads. Each rosette is monocarpic, dying after it flowers, but a healthy clump simply carries on through its many other rosettes and offsets.
