Crassula ovata 'Hobbit' quick care tips

Watering

Crassula ovata 'Hobbit' is a drought-tolerant succulent variety, so watering around once per week in the peak growing season is advised. Ensure the soil dries between waterings following the 3 Ds: drench, drain and dry. It is also advised to completely stop watering when conditions are frosty, keeping the plant dry for several months at a time over winter.

Feeding

Crassula ovata 'Hobbit' likes to be fed to bring out its best forms and colours. We recommend feeding with a liquid seaweed feed every 2 weeks in the main growing season from April to September. A feed we recommend is the one from our friends at LittleGreenSeaweed.

Ideal soil

Crassula ovata 'Hobbit' needs free draining soil to thrive. We recommend a mixture of 1/3 John Innes no.2, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 coconut coir. The soil mix we offer here is similar in composition to this.

Crassula ovata 'Hobbit'

Crassula ovata 'Hobbit', also known as ovata monstruosa, is a cultivar of Jade Plant that has curled leaves.

This variety blooms once mature with beautiful white flowers and can reach huge sizes, just like the ovata. In some cases, it has reached 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide. It's quite a slow grower so will not need to be moved or potted on too often.

Perfect for indoors in a light spot and outdoors as a standalone plant or to add texture and contrast to your mixed planter. Ideal for beginners.

Condition of plant

My order arrived in very good condition and has now been potted up. I do not expect much growth at this time of the year but Crassula Ovata Hobbit looks quite happy in my cold conservatory and I look forward to growth in the spring ad summer. A very attractive and unusual plant.
