Agave filifera quick care tips

Agave filifera is a drought-tolerant succulent variety, so watering around once per week in the peak growing season is advised. Ensure the soil dries between waterings following the 3 Ds: drench, drain and dry. It is also advised to completely stop watering when conditions are frosty, keeping the plant dry for several months at a time over winter.

Agave filifera likes to be fed to bring out its best forms and colours. We recommend feeding with a liquid seaweed feed every 2 weeks in the main growing season from April to September.

Agave filifera needs free draining soil to thrive. We recommend a mixture of 1/3 John Innes no.2, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 coconut coir. The soil mix we offer here is similar in composition to this.

Agave filifera

Also known as the ‘Thread-Leaf Agave’. This plant has a neat form with slender spiky leaves, featuring hairs on each leaf margin.

This is a tight compact growing medium sized agave that is capable of reaching 90cm in height and spread. Once mature, it is capable of withstanding cold temperatures as low as -8*c, but will need a good free draining soil mix to survive a cold winter.

Like all Agave, they will appreciate regular feeding in the growing season.

This Agave can be a very dramatic when it eventually flowers producing a 3-metre flower spike that is heavily clustered in dark pink to purple flowers for several months.
