Introducing the beautiful intergeneric hybrid ×Semponium ‘Sienna’, the world's first official cross between Sempervivum and Aeonium, specifically a cross of Sempervivum ‘Green Ice’ and Aeonium ‘Ice Warrior’.
x Semponium 'Sienna' is a fast-growing succulent that grows into a stunning conical shape. It produces a large central rosette with layers of evenly spaced smaller rosettes. The leaves are slender, with the ends of the foliage becoming more spoon-shaped. One of the most outstanding features of the x Semponium 'Sienna' is the colour. It has beautiful Sienna reds in the spring and summer, intensifying and becoming a vibrant electric red when positioned in strong sunlight. This succulent is one of the most attractive hybrids we have ever created at the nursery. The way the leaves illuminate when the sunlight hits them is like nothing else: a genuinely stunning plant worthy of a prime location in the garden.
Awarded Plant of the Month for June 2024.
The x Semponium 'Sienna' would like to be soaked and left to partially dry, usually between once and twice per week in the peak growing season. It is advised to reduce watering when plants are dormant, usually during a heatwave, and to significantly reduce/ stop watering when conditions are frosty. If grown indoors over winter, water the plant lightly and directly to the roots when the plant is thirsty.
x Semponium 'Sienna' needs free-draining soil to thrive. Use a specialist cactus and succulent mix, or blend compost with horticultural grit, sand, or perlite. This keeps the roots aerated and prevents excess moisture, which can cause root rot. Adding a gritty top-dressing not only looks attractive but also keeps foliage dry, reduces fungus gnats, and helps regulate moisture. Healthy soil is the foundation of successful succulent care.
Yes, but only in moderation. Feeding helps maintain healthy growth and strong colours. Use a diluted liquid fertiliser for succulents or a balanced cactus feed during the growing season (spring and summer). Apply every few weeks when watering. Avoid fertilising during dormancy in winter, as plants are resting and don’t need extra nutrients. Too much fertiliser can cause weak, leggy growth, so always err on the side of less.
