Delosperma echinatum | Pickle Plant quick care tips

Watering

Delosperma echinatum | Pickle Plant is a drought-tolerant succulent variety, so watering around once per week in the peak growing season is advised. Ensure the soil dries between waterings following the 3 Ds: drench, drain and dry. It is also advised to completely stop watering when conditions are frosty, keeping the plant dry for several months at a time over winter.

Feeding

Delosperma echinatum | Pickle Plant likes to be fed to bring out its best forms and colours. We recommend feeding with a liquid seaweed feed every 2 weeks in the main growing season from April to September.

Ideal soil

Delosperma echinatum | Pickle Plant needs free draining soil to thrive. We recommend a mixture of 1/3 John Innes no.2, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 coconut coir. The soil mix we offer here is similar in composition to this.

Delosperma echinatum | Pickle Plant

This quirky succulent gets its nickname from the tiny, soft bristles covering its green, gherkin-like stems — giving it the look of a miniature pickle! Native to South Africa, Delosperma echinatum forms a low, shrubby clump and can trail over pots or containers with time. Its unusual texture and playful appearance make it a standout in any succulent collection.

  • Fleshy, bristled stems resemble mini pickles

  • Compact, shrubby growth with light trailing habit

  • Produces small, daisy-like yellow-white flowers

  • Prefers bright, indirect sun and well-drained soil

  • Drought-tolerant and ideal for quirky container displays

Great for collectors who love characterful plants with a story.
