This quirky Sedum palmeri hybrid brings two good qualities, it's relatively hardy and the bright flowers attract pollinators.

It is best grown within other plants as it will add a good mix of texture and colour to the display. It will trail overtime so plant this on the edge of a pot to allow it to do so. They prefer full sun as this will bring the most colour out of them.

Sedum 'Cyclone' is delivered bare-root and should be planted promptly into gritty compost or sharply drained garden soil. Spread the roots naturally and keep the crown at the same depth at which it was previously growing.

Water once to settle the roots, then allow all excess moisture to drain. Keep the plant in a bright, sheltered position while it anchors, protecting newly planted material from severe frost or prolonged rain.

Once established, follow the normal hardy-succulent routine. Good light, airflow and drainage are more important than frequent watering.

Watering

Water Sedum 'Cyclone' thoroughly after planting and during prolonged dry weather, then allow the compost or soil to drain. Established plants growing outdoors usually need little supplementary water in normal UK conditions.

Containers dry more quickly than open ground, so check them during warm weather. Water in the morning and direct the water towards the compost rather than leaving it trapped in dense foliage.

Avoid waterlogged conditions through autumn and winter. Persistent winter wet causes more losses among hardy succulents than low temperature alone.

Light and position

Provide Sedum 'Cyclone' with Full Sun - 5+ Hours of Sun. Suitable positions can include Sunny Windowsill, Conservatory, and Outdoor Tabletop. Strong natural light encourages compact growth, seasonal colour and reliable flowering.

Avoid positions that become shaded by surrounding plants as the season progresses. Pale, open growth and weak stems usually indicate that the plant needs a brighter position.

Good airflow is as important as sunshine, particularly during wet weather. Remove fallen leaves and surrounding debris that could hold moisture against the plant.

Compost and drainage

Plant Sedum 'Cyclone' in gritty, sharply drained compost or garden soil. For containers, use approximately 50% multi-purpose compost and 50% horticultural grit or perlite. Always choose a pot with unrestricted drainage holes.

Improve heavy garden soil with grit and plant on a slight mound or raised area where winter water can escape. A mineral top-dressing keeps the lowest foliage away from damp soil.

Do not enrich the planting area heavily. Hardy succulents remain more compact and resilient when grown in moderately lean, free-draining conditions.

Feeding

Hardy succulents need less fertiliser than tender pot-grown plants. Apply a light, balanced feed once in spring if growth is weak or the plant has remained in the same container for several years.

Feed only when the compost is moist and active growth has started. Excess fertiliser produces soft, stretched growth that is more vulnerable to winter damage.

Plants growing in open ground rarely need additional feeding when the soil is healthy and drainage is good.

Winter care

The recorded minimum temperature for Sedum 'Cyclone' is -4°C. Position it in bright light and provide the sharp drainage needed for it to tolerate winter conditions successfully.

Remove fallen leaves and wet debris from around the crown. Move containers beneath a rain shelter during prolonged wet spells if they cannot drain freely.

Do not keep hardy succulents warm and dark indoors. Their best protection is a naturally cool, bright and airy position with dry roots.

Summer care

Water newly planted Sedum 'Cyclone' during prolonged dry weather until it is established. Mature hardy Sedums usually tolerate ordinary summer drought once their roots have spread.

Low-growing, mat-forming types can be trimmed lightly if they spread beyond their allotted space. Taller border types (Hylotelephium) are best cut back to ground level in late winter or early spring; a light pinch of the new shoots in late spring encourages denser, self-supporting growth and reduces flopping.

Repotting
