Aptenia cordifolia variegata quick care tips

Aptenia cordifolia variegata is a drought-tolerant succulent variety, so watering around once per week in the peak growing season is advised. Ensure the soil dries between waterings following the 3 Ds: drench, drain and dry. It is also advised to completely stop watering when conditions are frosty, keeping the plant dry for several months at a time over winter.

Aptenia cordifolia variegata likes to be fed to bring out its best forms and colours. We recommend feeding with a liquid seaweed feed every 2 weeks in the main growing season from April to September.

Aptenia cordifolia variegata needs free draining soil to thrive. We recommend a mixture of 1/3 John Innes no.2, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 coconut coir. The soil mix we offer here is similar in composition to this.

Aptenia cordifolia variegata

A vibrant succulent with bright yellow variegation and stunning pink flowers during the summer. An amazing array of colours at all times of the year.

Also known as heart-leaf ice plant or baby sun rose, originates from South Africa, particularly from the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces.

It’s a fast-growing ground-cover succulent, well-suited to arid and coastal climates, and it’s part of the Aizoaceae family. Its natural habitat includes sandy soils, rocky outcrops, and dry slopes, where it thrives in full sun and well-drained conditions.

Perfect for adding a pop of colour to any garden or windowsill.

  • Choose a pot with a drainage hole if you can’t limit the watering (outdoors). A pot with no drainage hole can be used as long as you water moderately. A pot with a hole tends to be more forgiving. Also, as it is slightly breathable, a terracotta pot is usually preferred over a plastic pot, but the succulents dont seem to mind too much.
