The striking Aeonium 'Big Bang' has unique black-green irregularly striped foliage and a compact form. Perfect for adding interest to any garden or indoor space, this plant is easy to care for and requires minimal watering. With its vibrant colours and low-maintenance nature, it's the perfect addition to any plant collection. Takes very similar care and liking to Aeonium ‘Schwarzkopf’.

Aeonium 'Big Bang' is delivered bare-root, so it will need time to establish after planting. Carefully unpack the plant, remove any remaining packaging and check the plant has arrived in good health.

Plant Aeonium 'Big Bang' in fresh, free-draining compost, making sure the roots are spread naturally rather than tightly folded. For the best start, bury a suitable section of healthy bare stem in the compost. This will anchor Aeonium 'Big Bang' securely in its pot and encourage stronger root development. Aeoniums tolerate having part of their bare stem buried, but keep every leaf and rosette above the compost surface. Tap the pot lightly on the potting bench several times to settle the compost around the plant, but do not compress it heavily.

Wait five to seven days before watering. This allows any small root injuries caused during lifting and transport to dry, reducing the risk of rot. After this settling period, water lightly until the plant has fully established, then water with the 3 D's method.

Keep Aeonium 'Big Bang' in a bright, sheltered position while it establishes. Avoid intense midday sunshine for the first week, then gradually introduce it to its recommended light conditions. Some lower-leaf loss or temporary softness is normal while new roots develop.

Watering

Give Aeonium 'Big Bang' a thorough watering, allowing excess water to drain freely from the pot. Wait until the compost has dried before watering again. Remember our 3 D’s method: drench, drain and dry.

Aeonium 'Big Bang' grows actively during the cooler months, particularly in spring and autumn. Check the compost regularly and water according to its condition rather than following a set schedule. During hot summer dormancy or cold winter weather, keep the plant much drier.

Light and position

Provide Aeonium 'Big Bang' with Full Sun - 5+ Hours of Sun. Suitable positions may include Balcony, Patio, and Conservatory. Good natural light encourages balanced branching and compact rosettes.

Avoid dark rooms or positions far from a window, which can cause weak, stretched stems. Introduce stronger sunshine gradually after winter or delivery, and provide temporary shade during intense heatwaves.

Compost and drainage

Plant Aeonium 'Big Bang' in a free-draining mixture containing approximately one third multi-purpose compost, one third coconut coir, and one third horticultural grit or perlite. Always use a pot with drainage holes.

Large branching Aeoniums can become top-heavy as they mature, so it is recommended to choose a stable pot that provides enough room for the roots to develop, but avoid going too large, as excess compost can stay wet for longer and take much longer to dry out.

A terracotta pot is preferred as it provides additional stability and aids in aerating the compost, helping root development.

Feeding

Fresh compost should provide Aeonium 'Big Bang' with enough nutrients for its 3-6 months of growth. After this, apply a half strength balanced liquid feed approximately once every two weeks while the plant is actively growing.

Feed only when the compost is already moist, preferably just after watering. Do not feed Aeonium 'Big Bang' during summer dormancy or prolonged cold weather because this makes it susceptible to rot/ frost.

Winter care

The recorded minimum temperature for Aeonium 'Big Bang' is 2°C. Move it into a bright, airy and protected position before conditions fall below this level. Keep the compost considerably drier during cold weather and use horticultural fleece for additional protection during short cold spells.

Summer care

During prolonged hot weather, Aeonium 'Big Bang' may enter summer dormancy. Growth will slow, its colours may deepen and the rosettes can close towards their centres. This is a natural response to heat and is nothing to worry about.

Move Aeonium 'Big Bang' away from intense afternoon sunshine if its leaves begin to scorch. Reduce watering considerably and stop feeding while the rosettes remain closed. Normal care can resume when temperatures become cooler and the rosettes begin opening again.

Repotting

Repot Aeonium 'Big Bang' during spring or early autumn, either annually or when it becomes root-bound, unstable or too large for its container. Replace tired compost with a fresh, free-draining mixture and choose a pot only moderately larger than the existing one.

Older Aeoniums often develop long sections of bare stem. These can be planted 4-6 inches deeper to encourage additional roots and improve stability, but never bury leaves or rosettes. Handle the branches carefully because mature stems can split if placed under pressure.

Propagation

Aeonium 'Big Bang' can be propagated from stem cuttings during spring or late summer. Select a healthy rosette and remove it with a section of mature stem using clean, sharp snips.

Leave the cutting somewhere bright, dry and airy for three to five days, allowing the cut surface to seal. Place it into free-draining compost and keep it in bright, indirect light. Water sparingly until roots develop, as an unrooted cutting cannot absorb much moisture and is more vulnerable to rot.

Common problems

Stretched stems, widely spaced leaves and loose rosettes usually indicate that Aeonium 'Big Bang' needs more light. Move it gradually into a brighter position and rotate the pot regularly to keep its growth balanced.

Soft stems, dark tissue or sudden collapse are commonly associated with excess moisture, particularly during cold weather or summer dormancy. Remove damaged growth and allow healthy material to dry before watering again.

Older lower leaves naturally dry and fall as Aeonium 'Big Bang' matures. This is part of its normal growth and gradually reveals the distinctive branching stems beneath the rosettes.
