Watering
Watering
Portulacaria afra f. variegata is a drought-tolerant succulent variety, so watering around once per week in the peak growing season is advised. Ensure the soil dries between waterings following the 3 Ds: drench, drain and dry. It is also advised to completely stop watering when conditions are frosty, keeping the plant dry for several months at a time over winter.
Feeding
Feeding
Portulacaria afra f. variegata likes to be fed to bring out its best forms and colours. We recommend feeding with a liquid seaweed feed every 2 weeks in the main growing season from April to September. A feed we recommend is the one from our friends at LittleGreenSeaweed.
Ideal soil
Ideal soil
Portulacaria afra f. variegata needs free draining soil to thrive. We recommend a mixture of 1/3 John Innes no.2, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 coconut coir. The soil mix we offer here is similar in composition to this.

Portulacaria afra f. variegata
Also known as Portulacaria afra f. variegata.
This very interesting succulent Crassula afra f. variegata or more commonly known as the elephant bush.
This variety is used extensively as a succulent shrub in California due to the size it grows to, a size of 2 to 3 feet in height and a spread of up to 10 feet in ideal conditions. Landscapers love to use it as it creates an amazing ground cover that suppresses weeds and survives extremely hot and dry conditions.
It's an incredibly easy plant to grow, especially indoors, as they respond well to little care. To keep them compact, keep them in a small pot and prune once a year. Protect from frosts.
