Gasteria carinata quick care tips

Watering

Gasteria carinata is a drought-tolerant succulent variety, so watering around once per week in the peak growing season is advised. Ensure the soil dries between waterings following the 3 Ds: drench, drain and dry. It is also advised to completely stop watering when conditions are frosty, keeping the plant dry for several months at a time over winter.

Feeding

Gasteria carinata likes to be fed to bring out its best forms and colours. We recommend feeding with a liquid seaweed feed every 2 weeks in the main growing season from April to September.

Ideal soil

Gasteria carinata needs free draining soil to thrive. We recommend a mixture of 1/3 John Innes no.2, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 coconut coir. The soil mix we offer here is similar in composition to this.

Gasteria carinata

Also known as the ‘Keeled Ox Tongue’.

A compact, slow-growing succulent with deep green, textured leaves speckled with white. As it matures, it takes on beautiful red-earth tones that add warmth and character. This clump-forming species produces offsets from the base, making it ideal for small spaces or container displays. In bloom, it sends up delicate light pink flowers marked with green stripes, each reaching up to 4cm long.
