Light and position

Haworthias thrive in warmth, so Haworthia comptoniana 'Crystal' is generally happy through summer. Bright light in the warmer months brings out the reds, bronzes and metallic tones these plants are prized for, so there is no need to hide them away in deep shade.

Growth naturally slows outside their winter growing season, so keep watering light and let the compost dry fully between drinks rather than watering more simply because it is summer. Good airflow around the rosette helps prevent moisture lingering in the crown.

Repotting

Persistent shrivelling despite watering can instead mean the roots have died or been damaged, so always inspect the root system before reaching for the watering can. You may need to water a little more often, or replant deeper into fresh substrate, rather than simply soaking a plant that will not recover.

Check between the leaves and around the fleshy roots for mealybug, which hide in exactly these sheltered spots. Isolate and treat an affected plant promptly.
