Sustainabilty at Surreal Succulents

At Surreal Succulents, sustainability isn't a marketing message - it's woven into everything we do. From how we grow our plants to how we package and ship them, we're committed to reducing our environmental impact while helping gardeners prepare for a changing climate.

Climate-Resilient Planting

We specialise in ornamental, hardy plants capable of thriving across the UK as our climate continues to change. With increasingly hot, dry summers and more frequent extreme weather events, traditional planting schemes are becoming unsustainable.

Our focus is on developing and showcasing plants that retain their structure, beauty, and impact while requiring minimal water - even during prolonged heatwaves. These are gardens designed for the future: resilient, low-maintenance, and adapted to real-world conditions rather than ideal ones.

100% Peat-Free Growing

All our plants are grown 100% peat-free, and this is central to our environmental responsibility.

Peat extraction causes irreversible damage to vital carbon-rich ecosystems, releasing stored carbon and destroying habitats that take thousands of years to regenerate. By growing exclusively in peat-free compost, we actively reduce our environmental impact while supporting sustainable horticulture aligned with RHS and UK climate goals.

Plastic-Free Packaging

We avoid single-use plastics throughout our operation. All plants shipped by post are packaged using only:

  • Cardboard
  • Tissue paper
  • Paper tape

Plastic pots are reused wherever possible, and those no longer fit for purpose are recycled. When your plants arrive, you can feel good knowing that no unnecessary plastic was used to get them to your door.

Recycled Plastics Initiative

In collaboration with UK recycling specialist DCW Polymers, we've taken our commitment to sustainability even further.

We've recycled our own old plant pots alongside reclaimed ocean plastics from Cornwall and Devon, transforming them into durable sheet material. These recycled plastics are now used to construct plant stands and display infrastructure across our nursery - giving long-term value to waste materials that would otherwise end up in landfill or the ocean.

Low-Impact Growing Methods

Passive Winter Protection

We use horticultural fleece for winter protection rather than heating greenhouses. This passive approach dramatically reduces energy consumption while allowing us to focus on genuinely hardy plants that don't require artificial climate control.

Biological Pest Control

We use biological pest control methods including nematodes and parasitic wasps rather than chemical interventions. This natural approach protects beneficial insects, maintains ecosystem balance, and eliminates chemical residues on plants destined for gardens and homes.

Water Efficiency

Succulents require approximately five times less watering compared to plants grown at typical nurseries. This dramatic reduction in water consumption makes our operation inherently more sustainable and demonstrates the viability of drought-tolerant horticulture at scale.

Supporting Sustainable Horticulture

This approach demonstrates a genuine commitment to sustainability - not as a marketing message, but as an integrated part of how we grow, display, and sell plants.

Sponsorship of our RHS Chelsea exhibit directly supports this climate-resilient, low-impact approach to horticulture, aligning strongly with ESG commitments that are now a core requirement for many organisations.
