エケベリア ssp. nova is delivered bare-root and will need time to establish in its new pot. Unpack it carefully, remove the protective material and check that the rosettes, branching stems and roots have arrived in good condition. Avoid rubbing any powdery farina from the leaves.

Plant エケベリア ssp. nova in the compost recommended in this guide and spread the roots into a natural position rather than folding or forcing them into the pot. If エケベリア ssp. nova has a length of healthy bare stem beneath its rosettes, bury a suitable section of it in the compost for the best start. Watering

Check the compost and the weight of the pot rather than watering to a fixed schedule. During active spring and summer growth, a bright, warm position can dry the pot quickly and it may need checking several times a week, while cool or humid conditions slow drying considerably.

Water around the edge of the pot and towards the compost rather than pouring into the many rosettes. A branching plant holds several tight crowns where water can lodge, and moisture trapped between packed leaves can cause marking and crown rot, particularly during cool or still weather. Where stems and heads are crowded, tip the pot briefly after watering to let any pooled water drain away.

Water in the morning so the foliage and surface dry before nightfall, and reduce the frequency considerably through autumn and winter. Give a little water only when the lower leaves begin to soften. Firm rosettes tolerate a dry spell far more safely than cold, permanently damp compost.

Light and position

Select a container that is only moderately larger than the root system. As the plant branches it will become top-heavy, so a slightly wider, stable pot helps support the spreading heads without leaving a large volume of unused compost that stays wet for too long.

Terracotta is a useful choice in the cooler, humid UK climate because its porous sides let moisture evaporate more quickly and air reach the roots. Feeding

Fresh compost should contain enough nutrients to support エケベリア ssp. nova for approximately three to six months. When repotting in spring, a five to six-month slow-release fertiliser can be mixed through the compost according to the manufacturer's instructions.

If you prefer liquid feeding, wait until the plant is established and apply a balanced liquid feed at half the recommended strength every two to four weeks during active spring and summer growth. Winter care

The recorded minimum temperature for エケベリア ssp. nova is 0°C. Move it into a bright, airy and protected position before conditions fall below this level. Most tender branching Echeverias are best kept frost-free, with temperatures of around 7-13 degrees Celsius holding the cluster compact without forcing weak winter growth.

Give エケベリア ssp. nova the brightest position available during the shorter days, such as a greenhouse, conservatory or cool windowsill. Keep the compost mostly dry, giving a little water in the morning only if lower leaves soften and the pot feels light. Cold, wet roots are especially prone to rot, and moisture caught between the many crowded heads is slow to dry.

Do not place the plant directly above a radiator, as warm dry air with weak winter light stretches the stems while the compost stays damp below. Good airflow around a multi-headed plant is important, as still, damp air settling among the rosettes encourages rot.

Use high-quality horticultural fleece during short cold spells, draping it loosely so it does not press against the rosettes, and remove it in milder spells to restore light and airflow.

Summer care

Spring and summer are the main growing seasons for エケベリア ssp. nova. As light and warmth increase it branches actively, pushing out new stems, offsets and flower spikes. Check the compost regularly and water thoroughly whenever it has dried.

Keep greenhouses, conservatories and indoor growing areas well ventilated. Good airflow is especially valuable on a branching plant, where crowded heads can otherwise trap heat and humidity and scorch or mark the outer leaves. Provide temporary afternoon shade during exceptional heatwaves while keeping the plant in plenty of overall light.

Rotate the pot regularly so every head colours evenly and the clump does not lean towards the window. Remove fully dry lower leaves and any withered stem sections carefully, as these trap moisture and shelter mealybug deep within the cluster. This is also the ideal season to prune or behead the plant to shape it and to root the cuttings.

Flower spikes can be left for their display and for pollinators. Once they finish and the stem dries, cut it close to its base with clean snips rather than pulling it, which can tear the stem it grew from.

Repotting

Repot エケベリア ssp. nova in spring when the roots escape the drainage holes, the branching heads make the plant top-heavy and unstable, offsets crowd the container, or water runs straight through tired compost. A spreading clump often needs a slightly wider, heavier pot as much for stability as for root room.

Allow the old compost to dry, then ease the plant out while supporting it beneath the main stems rather than pulling on the rosettes. Remove as much old compost as possible and inspect the roots, cutting away any brown, hollow or soft ones with clean snips. This is a natural moment to divide a large clump or remove a few heads as cuttings.

Position the plant at the same depth in a pot only one or two sizes larger. A length of healthy bare stem may be buried to anchor a leggy plant, but keep the crown and every rosette above the surface, as buried foliage rots easily. Fill around the roots without compressing the mixture, then tap the pot to settle it.

Leave the repotted plant in a bright, sheltered position for at least three to five days before watering, so any root injuries can dry.

Common problems

Loose, open rosettes and long, bare, leaning stems usually mean エケベリア ssp. nova needs more light. Move it gradually into a brighter position and rotate the pot. Existing stretched growth will not tighten again, but a leggy branching plant is easily renewed by beheading and re-rooting the heads.

Soft translucent leaves, a loose crown, blackened tissue or a collapsing head are signs of excess moisture and rot. On a branching plant, check each crowded rosette individually, remove affected material, and allow healthy tissue to dry before repotting into fresh, dry compost. Keep water out of the centres and let pooled water drain from between the heads.

Outer and lower leaves naturally dry as the stems extend. Remove them once they come away easily and check the sheltered pockets between stems and heads for white, cotton-like mealybug, which favours these hidden spots. Treat any infestation promptly and isolate the plant.

Dry brown patches can follow sudden sun exposure, especially where farina has been rubbed away or on inner heads previously shaded by outer rosettes. Introduce direct light gradually.
