Alworthia 'Black Gem' est un hybride entre Aloe speciosa et Haworthia cymbiformis.

x Alworthia 'Black Gem' is delivered bare-root and will need time to establish in its new pot. Unpack it carefully, remove the protective material and check that the leaves, stems and roots have arrived in good condition.

Pot x Alworthia 'Black Gem' into the free-draining, gritty mix recommended in this guide. Spread the roots into a natural position rather than folding or forcing them into the pot. Hold the plant at the correct depth while adding compost around the roots, then tap the pot lightly on the potting bench several times to settle the mixture. Do not press the compost down heavily by hand.

Wait five to seven days before watering. This resting period lets small root injuries from lifting and transport dry over, reducing the risk of rot. After this, water lightly while the roots establish, and begin the normal watering routine once the plant is firmly rooted and showing healthy growth.

Watering

Water x Alworthia 'Black Gem' minimally, always letting the compost dry right through before watering again. When you do water, drench the plant so every excess drop drains away, but never pour water into the centre of the rosette or over the crown, as moisture trapped between the leaves invites rot.

Haworthias are far more likely to be lost to overwatering than to drought, and roots sitting in damp compost quickly rot, so err on the side of keeping them dry. Their main growing season is actually winter, so keep them ticking over rather than following the usual summer-heavy routine.

Healthy leaves look full, plump and shiny. If the plant looks persistently dehydrated you may need to water a little more often, or plant it deeper into fresh substrate. Check the roots first, though, as lost or damaged roots cause the same shrivelling and will not recover from more water alone.

Light and position

Provide x Alworthia 'Black Gem' with Plein soleil - Plus de 5 heures d'ensoleillement. Haworthias prefer lower light levels than most sun-baking succulents and grow naturally in the light shade of rocks and shrubs, which makes them ideal for indoor cultivation and excellent desk and windowsill plants.

In lower light they keep a lush, vibrant green appearance, while brighter, more intense light draws out a stunning range of colours, including reds, bronze and metallic tones, with golden lines on some hybrids. Increase light levels gradually to bring out this colour without stressing a plant grown soft in the shade.

Haworthias tolerate lower light than most succulents, but avoid a genuinely dark spot, which draws the rosette into weak, stretched growth. Turn the pot regularly so it develops evenly.

Compost and drainage

Plant x Alworthia 'Black Gem' in a free-draining, gritty mixture of roughly 50% multi-purpose compost and 50% horticultural grit and perlite, in a pot with unrestricted drainage. Good drainage is the single most important guard against rot in these rot-prone succulents.

Some Haworthias form large, fleshy roots that are substantial compared with the rosette above. Choose a pot deep enough to hold these roots naturally, without folding or compressing them.

Finish with a generous mineral top-dressing of grit around the base. This keeps the crown dry, supports the plant and improves airflow around the lowest leaves.

Feeding

Feed x Alworthia 'Black Gem' only during active growth, using a balanced liquid feed at quarter to half strength every three to four weeks. These are slow-growing plants that need very little feeding, and their main growing season falls in winter rather than summer.

Feeding encourages faster growth but produces a lusher, greener appearance and can affect the stress colours valued on many cultivars. Feed lightly where compact form and strong colour are the priority.

Only ever feed when the compost is already moist, and hold off while the plant is clearly resting or a damaged root system is recovering.

Winter care

The recorded minimum temperature for x Alworthia 'Black Gem' is 2°C. Haworthias are tender in the UK and cannot tolerate frost or cold, so bring them indoors or into a frost-free greenhouse in good time before freezing weather arrives.

Unusually for a succulent, winter is Haworthia's main growing season, so keep the plant frost-free but not cold, in bright light, and water sparingly whenever the compost has dried out rather than withholding water completely.

Avoid cold, damp corners and the dry heat of a radiator. Bright light, steady airflow and stable, frost-free temperatures will carry the plant through winter in good condition.

Summer care

Haworthias thrive in warmth, so x Alworthia 'Black Gem' is generally happy through summer. Bright light in the warmer months brings out the reds, bronzes and metallic tones these plants are prized for, so there is no need to hide them away in deep shade.

Growth naturally slows outside their winter growing season, so keep watering light and let the compost dry fully between drinks rather than watering more simply because it is summer. Good airflow around the rosette helps prevent moisture lingering in the crown.

If the plant is clearly resting, do not force it with heavy watering or feeding. Steady warmth and bright light will keep the rosette tight and well coloured until active winter growth resumes.

Repotting

Repot x Alworthia 'Black Gem' in spring, once offsets crowd the pot, fleshy roots fill the container or the compost has broken down. As slow growers, Haworthias need repotting only every couple of years.

Tease away dead, hollow roots and keep the firm, healthy ones. Some growers shorten damaged roots to encourage fresh growth, but every cut surface must be left to dry before the plant is watered again.

Keep the crown sitting above the compost surface, and move up only to a container slightly larger than the root system.

Common problems

Soft, translucent, mushy leaves point to excess moisture and rot, often from overwatering or water sitting in the rosette. Water minimally, keep the crown dry, and make sure the compost dries right through between waterings.

Persistent shrivelling despite watering can instead mean the roots have died or been damaged, so always inspect the root system before reaching for the watering can. You may need to water a little more often, or replant deeper into fresh substrate, rather than simply soaking a plant that will not recover.

Check between the leaves and around the fleshy roots for mealybug, which hide in exactly these sheltered spots. Isolate and treat an affected plant promptly.
