On Arrival

アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ is delivered bare-root. Set it into a shallow pot of fresh, free-draining compost, keeping the flat rosette completely above the surface and positioning it at a slight angle so water runs away from the crown.

Tap the pot gently to settle compost around the roots without pressing down on the plant. Wait five to seven days before watering so any root injuries can dry.

Keep アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ in bright, sheltered and airy conditions while it establishes. Protect it from strong midday sun initially and never allow water to remain trapped in the centre.

Watering

Water アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ around the edge of the pot, thoroughly moistening the roots while keeping water out of the flat central crown. Allow all excess moisture to drain and wait until the compost has dried before watering again.

Planting the rosette at a slight angle helps rain and irrigation run away from the centre, reflecting the cliff-face positions in which the species grows naturally.

Like other Aeoniums, アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ does its main growing in spring and autumn, slowing right down through the coldest UK winter weather and pausing in high summer heat. Water by the state of the compost rather than a fixed timetable. Keep it much drier during hot summer weather, when growth pauses, and during cold winter spells. Always water in the morning so the rosette can dry before temperatures fall.

Light and position

Provide アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ with 完全な日陰 - 1時間未満の日照. Suitable positions can include 日当たりの良い窓辺、パティオ、ロックガーデン. This species tolerates partial shade and can grow well on a bright windowsill, but it still needs strong natural light to maintain its flat form.

Avoid exposing a sheltered plant suddenly to intense sunshine. Introduce stronger light gradually and provide temporary shade during severe heat.

Keep the rosette in an airy position. Dense surrounding growth or stagnant air allows moisture to remain trapped between its many closely packed leaves.

Compost and drainage

Plant アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ in a free-draining mixture of approximately 60% multi-purpose compost and 40% horticultural grit or perlite, our recommended blend for Aeoniums. Always choose a pot with unrestricted drainage holes.

Select a container that is only moderately larger than the root system. Too much unused compost remains wet for longer and makes careful watering more difficult.

Terracotta is an excellent choice because its porous surface helps the compost dry evenly and allows air to reach the roots. A thin layer of horticultural grit around the plant also keeps lower leaves away from damp compost.

Feeding

Feed アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ during spring, while it is producing active growth. Apply a balanced liquid feed at half the recommended strength every two to three weeks once the nutrients in fresh compost have been used.

Apply feed only when the compost is moist. Stop feeding as growth slows so the plant enters winter with firm, resilient tissue.

Do not attempt to force rapid growth with high-nitrogen fertiliser. A naturally compact, slowly formed rosette is stronger and keeps its characteristic shape.

Winter care

The recorded minimum temperature for アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ is 4°C. Being frost-tender, move it into a bright, airy and protected position before conditions fall below this level; it is not hardy like a Sempervivum. A greenhouse, conservatory or bright, cool room provides suitable protection.

Keep the compost much drier through winter, watering only around every six weeks on average, as cold, wet roots rot readily and the flat crown is especially prone to sitting damp. Do not place the plant above a radiator, where dry heat and weak light cause distorted growth.

Good airflow is essential over winter to keep moisture from lingering in the packed rosette. Use horticultural fleece for short cold spells, but never let water collect in the centre.

Summer care

In prolonged hot weather アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ pauses growth and enters its natural summer rest. The flat rosette may draw its leaves inwards a little and the colours can deepen. This is normal heat-avoidance behaviour and nothing to worry about.

Move the plant out of intense afternoon sun if the leaves scorch, as the exposed flat rosette catches strong overhead light directly. Reduce watering while growth is paused and stop feeding. A half-strength liquid seaweed feed lightly misted over the leaves in the cool of early morning acts as a tonic that helps アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ cope with heat stress, but keep it off the flat central crown so no moisture pools there.

When temperatures cool and the rosette relaxes open again, gradually return to normal watering. Check the compost first, as a resting plant may still hold moisture around its roots.

Repotting

Repot アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ only when the root system fills the container or the compost has broken down. It tolerates being pot-bound and does not benefit from an oversized pot.

Use a broad, shallow container with excellent drainage. Set the rosette at a slight angle and keep every healthy leaf above the compost surface.

Handle the plant from beneath because its densely packed leaves mark easily. Wait for damaged roots to dry before watering.

Common problems

Water trapped between the leaves can damage the central growing point and cause crown rot. Plant アエオニウム・タブイフォルメ at an angle, provide airflow and remove loose debris carefully.

An upright or stretched rosette indicates insufficient light. Move the plant gradually into a brighter position without exposing it suddenly to intense sun.

Flowering is a natural final stage for this monocarpic species. The main rosette dies after seed production, so collect seed if you want to continue growing the plant.
