Aloe polyphylla | Spiral Aloe Care Guide

Everything you need to know to grow Aloe polyphylla

Aloe polyphylla, commonly called the Spiral Aloe, is a favourite with succulent enthusiasts for its spiral growth pattern and its hardiness. It can take temperatures well below freezing, so in the UK it can be grown outdoors all year round.

Facts about the plant

Aloe polyphylla is native to the Maluti mountains of Lesotho, where it grows in mineral-rich soils through snowy winters. It is also the national plant of Lesotho. Unlike many succulents, the Spiral Aloe is quite thirsty and hungry, and needs more frequent watering and feeding during its growing season. It needs plenty of air around its roots too, and overwatering can lead to rot, so good drainage matters.

Soil mix

We recommend a soil mix of 55% multipurpose compost, 25% perlite and 20% pumice stones. As the Aloe grows, its lower leaves naturally dry out and die back, which encourages new root growth. You can carefully remove these leaves by hand.

Placement

When planting, set the Aloe on a raised mound or at an angle so that water drains away from the crown. It is a very tough plant that does well in full sun, and mature plants will take temperatures as low as -15°C.

Quick care tips

  • Plant at an angle so that excess water runs off the crown.
  • Hardy to -15°C, so it can be grown outdoors in UK gardens.
  • Grows best in full sun with a well-draining soil mix.
  • Water and feed generously during the growing season.
  • Soil mix: 55% compost, 25% perlite and 20% pumice stones.
